The 2014 La Mission Haut Brion is a blendof 54% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and45% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked between15 September and 8 October and raised in55% new oak. It has retained that engaginglyfresh and vibrant bouquet, the bashfulnature that it showed in barrel replacedby a more outgoing personality.This is an exquisite bouquet with pureblack fruit, cold stone, a touch of blackolive and later a suggestion of boysenberrypreserve. The palate is still structuredand considering that a majority is Merlot,quite masculine. There remains some newoak to be fully assimilated, althoughthere is clearly the fruit to soak thatup. It comes more alive on the second halfwith a lovely spiciness and impressivepersistence. It will have more to givedown the line and the strictness impliesthat this La Mission Haut Brion should beafforded a decade in the cellar beforeit will show what it can do.
